Academic Writing
Whether you are a university student or planning to study Master’s degree or PhD, writing skills are essential for your success in your academic life. The course is developed to help students learn the process of writing in English for academic purposes such as writing essays, assignments, research papers, etc. In this course, you will start with a strong foundation by mastering the grammatical structures and transitional phrases to link and express your ideas clearly in an academic format. You will build on this foundation by introducing to academic essays. You will learn about the three types of academic essays and how to improve your writing skills when writing each type. The course covers how to create effective thesis statements for your essays; how to plan and write compare/contrast, cause/effect, and argumentative essays; and how to write well-developed introduction, conclusion, and body paragraphs.
Throughout the course, you will also learn the steps involved in planning, outlining, and writing a research paper. Some topics covered include how to choose appropriate research topics for your classes, how to find source material for research papers, how to avoid plagiarizing, and how to take and organize notes in the process of your research. In addition, you will learn how to develop your critical thinking skills to make decisions about what to include and not include in your writing. The course will also teach how to summarize, analyze, question, and evaluate written texts.
